Trailhead Shelter at Eliason Nature Reserve, January 2018
In late December of 2017, ICON provided a custom rectangular gable structure to the City of Portage for use as a restroom/storage/shelter at the south end of the Eliason Trail which runs from West Osterhout Avenue, through the Eliason Nature Reserve, to its north exit at Portage Industrial Drive. Design was produced by Wightman, a multi-disciplinary firm with offices in Allegan, Benton Harbor and Kalamazoo, all in Michigan.
Celery Flats is located in the Portage Creek Bicentennial Park, and straddles Garden Lane. The south side is The Celery Flats Historical Center which has several restored and relocated buildings. It serves for community events and private group use.
The north side used to have an interpretive center. Wightman designed an enlarged version of the Eliason Trailhead structure for use as a rest stop on the Garden Lane Trail, which replaced the Interpretive Center. ICON delivered on that design as well in June of 2018, and the project was completed in the spring of 2019.
