On December 13, 2017, the Historic District Review Board for the City of Beaufort, South Carolina issued a staff report to the city regarding new construction in Washington Street Park. This historic downtown neighborhood park was founded by the Beaufort County Negro Recreational Center in the years before integration and was the city’s only park to be used by the African American community in the 1950s and 1960s.
The board recommended the construction of this restroom facility according to guidelines found in The Beaufort Code, Article 4 – Building Design Standards, the Northwest Quadrant Design Principals, and the Preservation Manual Supplement. The intent was for this structure to fit seamlessly into the neighborhood, and that it set the tone and act as Phase 1 of a park restoration which will include a new picnic shelter and a new playground.
ICON provided the materials for exterior and interior walls, the roof, front columns, trim, doors and vents. The project was managed and installed by Carolina Recreation and Design of Mooresville, NC.
The exterior walls are a pre-fabricated system of pre-cut, laminated Red Cedar timbers that stack to the intended wall heights. Conventional framing was used for the interior walls and roof.
