San Diego State University River Park, Custom Design

River Park at SDSU Mission Valley, designed by Schmidt Design Group in San Diego, CA, is a vibrant public open space that reconnects the community to the San Diego River through trails, recreation areas, and gathering spaces.

A standout feature of the park is a sculptural shelter composed of more than 400 Alaskan Yellow Cedar wood slats installed across both the top and underside of the structure. As sunlight filters through the slats, it creates a dynamic “river” of light and shadow below, evoking the movement of water and reinforcing the park’s connection to its natural surroundings.
